When the public calls the Police Department, the first people they come into contact with are members of the Communications Division. 24 hours a day, seven days a week, these employees are responsible for dispatching all police, fire, and emergency medical units within the Borough of Fort Lee. The telecommunicators are trained to handle a wide range of emergency situations. All of the dispatchers are trained to provide emergency medical instruction over the telephone, including CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver, while the ambulance and paramedics are in route to a scene. In addition to emergency requests, the staff of the Communications Division is capable of providing routine assistance with most other problems. The Communications Division also has the ability to contact the other Borough Agencies after normal business hours for emergencies as well. We also maintain several databases. The first is a list of invalids within the Borough. In the event of an emergency, the dispatchers are quickly able to locate where an invalid resides and provide the responding units with that information, so they may be assisted rapidly. The second list is an emergency business contact list. In the event of an after hours emergency at a given location, we are able to contact business representatives to advise them of a problem at their store or office.
